Kharkiv children with leukemia went to Austria for treatment

Twelve Kharkiv children with leukemia went to Austria for treatment as a part of Austrian-German programme developed for the help to such patients.
The director of Healthcare Department Yurij Sorokolat noted that half of children are Kharkiv citizens and others are from Kharkiv region. They are all in disease-free survival stage. In Austria they will be additionally examined in St. Anna's Hospital (Vienna). They will get tertiary healthcare of dentist, ophthalmologist and other doctors. Children will also take course of supportive care at the expense of hosting side.
«We direct children to health improvement to Austria within many years. Since that time the recovery figure has increased up to 75%», - Yurij Sorokolat noted.
According to medical director of Kharkiv city children's hospital № 16, Tatiana Harchenko the disease-free survival figure was 5%.
«All this children are observed in our hospital. We know that cooperation with Austrian organization «Global 2000» greatly helped our children to get recovery from hemopathy. Many children go to Austria not for the first time and they get treatment and a lot of other positive emotions what is very important for children», - Tatiana Harchenko added.
She told that during 21 day in Austria children will visit historical and architectural monuments, excursions and meetings with interesting people. Children will be accompanied with haematologists who know German and work with children since the begining of their treatment.
Acting in charge of Kharkiv city mayor Gennadiy Kernes children will forward thank-you letters and memorable souvenirs to the institutors of the programme – the deputy burgomaster of Ibbs city Franc Brahinger and the manager of Austrian ecology organisation «Global 2000» Christoph Otto.
Note. Kharkiv children with oncologic diseases has been taking the course of treatment since 1996 as a part of International cooperation between Kharkiv city council and Austrian programme ecologic organization «Global 2000». About 300 children has visited Europe since then. Cooperation with Austrian organization is also directed to improvement of material and technical basis of the hospital №16 and development of diagnostic and treatment aid to children with oncohematological diseases.
