Ihor Terekhov discusses opportunities for development of new projects with UNICEF Representative in Ukraine

Today, January 27, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov met with Murat Sahin, the Head of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Ukraine.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the current humanitarian situation in the City and further cooperation with UNICEF. In particular, Murat Sahin proposed to increase the number of platforms to support children and families affected by the war as part of the project ‘Spilno. Meeting Points’ project in Kharkiv.

‘I have seen our ‘Spilno’ children’s points in Kharkiv. Yes, of course, they are no substitute for school or kindergarten, but they give at least a little sense of normal life. I would like to consider expanding this project in the City,’ Murat Sahin said.

For his part, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov emphasized that the development of education and science is one of the key priorities of the City Council and thanked UNICEF for its comprehensive support of children and adolescents in ensuring access to quality education even in times of war.

‘We are grateful for your help. Indeed, a large number of educational institutions in Kharkiv have been destroyed to some extent. Due to the danger of shelling, our children are forced to receive education in an online format, and they lack the communication and various activities they are used to which is very important. The number of people willing to attend the classes is enormous. That is why we will fully support your initiative to create more opportunities for the development of young Kharkiv residents,’ said the Mayor of Kharkiv.

Today, children’s playgrounds are already equipped at four subway stations.

It should be noted that UNICEF Ukraine has been actively helping the City since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. During this time, the organization has provided Kharkiv with 8 generators, 500 euro garbage containers, more than 2,000 hygiene and household chemical kits, clothes, boilers, and kits for people with special needs. Almost 800 families with children with disabilities and 500 large families received financial assistance.
