Gennady Kernes welcomes the adoption of a law on languages

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law "On State Language Policy." It was supported by 248 deputies out of 226 needed.

 
Gennady Kernes, Kharkiv city Mayor congratulated Kharkiv with the adoption of the law on languages. «The adoption of the bill by Ukrainian parliament expands the scope of the Russian language, will only benefit Ukraine and its citizens», - said the mayor.
 
Adopted legislation provides functioning of traditional regional languages and languages of minority groups along with official language.
 
The document preserves constitutional state of Ukrainian language. According to the document – Ukrainian is official language.

Herewith it is guaranteed that on the territory of Ukraine one can use regional languages freely. These are Russian, Belorussian, Bulgarian, Armenian, Gagauz, Yiddish, Crimean Tatar, Moldavian, German, Modern Greek, Polish, Rumanian, Slovak, Hungarian, Rusyn and Karaim. The validity of this law is spread on the languages that are native for about 10% of citizens who live on the territory of Ukraine.
 
We remind that according to the decision of Kharkiv regional council in June, 2006 and Kharkiv city council in March, 2007 Russian language received the regional status in Kharkiv region.
