Today, on 4 February, Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov took part in the signing of an agreement on the implementation of the school feeding programme in Ukraine for the 2024-2025 academic year between the Kharkiv City Council and the UN World Food Programme.
This initiative will additionally fund improved nutrition for pupils in grades 1-4 attending underground schools and the metro school. The programme will allocate UAH 9.9 million, which will increase the cost of one meal by 32%. Juices, fruit, dairy and other products will be added to the schoolchildren's diet.
‘It is important for us to provide children with a balanced diet. Thanks to your support, we will be able to continue providing free meals to schoolchildren. It will be healthy, as we will significantly expand the range of food for pupils in grades 1-4. This will include dairy products, more fruits, juices and healthy treats. In January, Kharkiv received the first instalment of UAH 5.7 million. I hope our cooperation will continue,’ said Igor Terekhov.
The mayor emphasised that all schoolchildren studying in a mixed format now receive meals free of charge.
The mayor also spoke about the situation in the education sector. According to him, more than half of the city's educational institutions were damaged as a result of hostile attacks, and four schools are beyond repair.
The international delegation visited one of Kharkiv's underground schools. After seeing what they saw, the coordinator of the UN World Food Programme in Ukraine, Richard Reagan, noted that he had never seen such an experience of organising the educational process before.
‘I have never seen such work anywhere else, it is unique! On the one hand, it's great that children can attend school, but on the other hand, it's sad that they have to study underground. This is a very difficult situation, but you have created a completely new, creative approach. We will do everything we can on our part, concentrate our activities in all frontline areas to help, and this includes Kharkiv,’ Richard Reagan said.
