Second underground school opened in Kharkiv

During the opening of the school, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said that the project was implemented with the assistance of international partners and funds from the city budget. He noted that after all the classrooms are opened, about 1,000 children will be able to study in the school in two shifts. 

‘I am grateful to all the educators who work in Kharkiv and teach our children even during the war! Thanks to the implementation of the projects of two underground schools and a metro school at six metro stations, we have the opportunity to teach more than 7,000 children in a mixed format. We are currently building other underground schools, three of which are scheduled to be completed by the end of spring and several more by 1 September. It is very important for Kharkiv to educate children in safe spaces, given all the challenges of wartime,’ the mayor stressed. 

In turn, Olga Demenko, Director of the Department of Education, said that the new underground school was built in compliance with all safety standards. The school also has inclusive classes and a separate resource room.

‘Everyone from the neighbourhood and the whole city could enrol in the school. When five more underground schools are completed, we will be able to enrol about 12,000 children in full-time education in safe conditions,’ said Olga Demenko.
