UN High Commissioner for Refugees visits Kharkiv

On 17 July, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi paid a working visit to Kharkiv.

Тogether with Mayor Igor Terekhov, he took part in a meeting of the Regional Office for International Cooperation, visited the Svoi adaptation space for IDPs and visited the sites of shelling.

During the visit, Filippo Grandi and Igor Terekhov discussed further assistance to Kharkiv. The mayor thanked the organisation for the support already provided in restoring housing and preparing it for the winter, and noted that the city needs help in providing modular houses for those Kharkiv residents whose private households were destroyed by shelling.

The mayor also said that a residential building on Gagarin Avenue, next to which a Russian bomb exploded almost a month ago, is being actively restored.

‘We have already conducted a technical examination, temporarily boarded up all the windows with chipboard, are now repairing the roof, and then we will build the wall. It is important for us to return people to their homes,’ said Igor Terekhov.

In his turn, Filippo Grandi noted that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has allocated a support package to Ukraine in the amount of USD 100 million. The priority is to provide Ukrainians with financial assistance to prepare for the winter.

‘We cannot carry out major rebuilding and reconstruction, but we can provide funds for quick repairs. We are also ready to help provide modular houses for Kharkiv residents who need them,’ said Filippo Grandi.
