New head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Ukraine visits Kharkiv
On 23 December, First Deputy Mayor of Kharkiv Oleksandr Novak met with the newly appointed head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Ukraine, Andrea De Domenico.
The conversation focused on further cooperation in restoring the city's infrastructure, adaptation of internally displaced persons, support for people with disabilities and overcoming energy challenges.
Oleksandr Novak spoke about the current state of affairs in Kharkiv. According to him, this year the city has started to restore 100 buildings, but the scale of destruction remains significant: out of 8,500 damaged residential buildings, more than half are multi-apartment buildings and 3,700 are private.
«The total number of damaged buildings, including offices, architectural monuments and administrative premises, has increased from more than 8,000 to almost 11,000 over the year. We are constantly helping people, and thanks to the support of the government and international funds, we are able to gradually restore the infrastructure. Our priorities are the reconstruction of housing and the creation of differentiated energy supply systems», - said the First Vice Mayor.
Andrea De Domenico expressed his support for Kharkiv and stressed his readiness to continue to help.
«I will do everything to provide the necessary support. We are analysing the situation from a humanitarian point of view and strive to help people who need it most», - said Andrea De Domenico.
Thanks to the cooperation of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and their partners, more than 35,000 families in Kharkiv affected by shelling and bombing have received financial assistance of UAH 810 million.
