The winners of the competition for projects to rebuild Northern Saltovka have been announced

The results of the Kharkiv Housing Challenge international competition were announced online today, 21 October.

A total of 259 projects from 53 countries were submitted to the competition for the restoration of Northern Saltovka. The jury, headed by British architect Norman Foster, selected the three best projects.

The winner was the project ‘Healing Kharkiv: From Ruins to Revival’ (UK), which focuses on strengthening buildings with locally sourced recycled materials, increased safety, accessibility, and thermal insulation, as well as expanding living space with winter gardens and terraces.

The second place was taken by the project ‘Blossoming Towards the Sun’ (China), which involves expanding housing with new facades, arranging balconies for landscaping, etc.

The third place was taken by the Modus Vita project (Turkey), which offers a modular system of underground shelters using high-strength concrete panels, including for public events.

Six other projects were also recognised for their ideas that could be useful for the further recovery of Kharkiv.

Mayor Ihor Terekhov thanked the organisers and participants of the competition for their concern for the future of Northern Salitvka, one of the most damaged residential areas, which was home to about 300,000 Kharkiv residents in peacetime.

‘We are faced with the task of combining the best solutions into a coherent complex. Some participants presented unique solutions for restoring facades, while others offered solutions for building shelters. Someone proposed an innovative approach to improving energy efficiency, while others focused on methods of reconstructing destroyed buildings or integrating elements for sustainable development. We appreciate every idea and plan to combine them to create a harmonious space for all Kharkiv residents,’ said Igor Terekhov.

The mayor said that next year the city will begin to turn these projects into real design solutions, which will then be implemented in construction. According to him, procedures for further funding are already underway.

The competition is part of the joint work of the city authorities and the Norman Foster Foundation to develop the concept of the Kharkiv Master Plan in cooperation with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe with the financial support of the German government. The winners will receive cash prizes: EUR 6 thousand for the first place, EUR 3 thousand for the second place, and EUR 1 thousand for the third place.
