Finalists of the competition of projects for the reconstruction of Northern Saltovka have been determined

The jury of the Kharkiv Housing Challenge International Competition held an online meeting today, 9 October.

The jury was chaired by British architect Norman Foster and included Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, representatives of international and local companies and organisations, including UN-Habitat, Arup Berlin, experts from Oxford and Harvard Universities, and the Kharkivproject Institute.

A total of 259 projects for the restoration of Northern Saltovka were submitted to the competition, including 27 works by Ukrainian architects. The jury selected the 20 best projects, which include the restoration of damaged apartment buildings, taking into account the improvement of their safety and energy efficiency, as well as the creation of a comfortable public space around them.

During the meeting, Igor Terekhov highlighted the most interesting projects, in his opinion. They include the construction of multifunctional shelters, addition of new structures to building facades, transformation of damaged premises into public spaces, construction of social housing, recycling of demolition waste, insulation of buildings with environmentally friendly materials, etc.

‘Many interesting projects were submitted. I thank all the participants for their work and everyone who is involved in the restoration of Kharkiv,’ said Igor Terekhov.

In his turn, Norman Foster said that the results of today's discussion would determine the top three leaders.

‘And then Kharkiv will need to make a lot of efforts to restore it,’ the jury chairman stressed.

The winners will receive cash prizes: EUR 6 thousand for the first place, EUR 3 thousand for the second place, and EUR 1 thousand for the third place. The results of the competition and further plans for the selected projects will be announced on 21 October.

The competition is part of the joint work of the city authorities and the Norman Foster Foundation to develop the concept of the Kharkiv Master Plan in cooperation with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe with the financial support of the German Government.
