Kharkiv to develop a municipal program of affordable housing

As part of the development of the General Plan concept, the city of Kharkiv is participating in an international project to introduce affordable housing rental models.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov announced this today, June 10, at the event «Restoring Kharkiv: Main Goals and Plans» held in Berlin.

According to him, this project is being implemented by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and funded by the German government. In total, more than 9.6 thousand buildings, mostly residential, were damaged to varying degrees in Kharkiv. The total damage is estimated at almost €10 billion.

«This year we plan to overhaul and reconstruct about 160 buildings. Another 400 overhaul and reconstruction projects are in the works. I believe that today we do not need to wait for the end of the war. Reconstruction right now, today, is very important for people, for their emotional state», - said Ihor Terekhov.

The mayor noted that it would be extremely difficult to meet the demand for new housing immediately.

«That is why our city is participating in an international project to introduce affordable housing rental models. Its goal is to develop a municipal program for the development of rental and affordable housing in Kharkiv for different target groups. As a result, a municipal housing stock for rent or mortgage will be formed. The experience of Germany, in particular, our sister city Nuremberg, will be used to create this program», - said the mayor.
