Kharkiv signs memorandum with UK Department for Transport

Today, on 11 September, Kharkiv City Council signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation on the development of a transport strategy for the city of Kharkiv with the Department for Transport of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov thanked Transport Secretary Louise Hague for her support in this difficult time and discussed with her the priority areas of cooperation. In particular, the possibility of preparing a transport strategy for the concept of the Kharkiv City Master Plan, which is being developed by the Norman Foster Foundation together with local architects and international experts with the coordination support of the UNECE project and financial support from the German government.

‘I am very grateful to the UK, to your people, for the political, financial and military assistance to Ukraine. There is a lot of destruction in Kharkiv. This concerns both critical infrastructure and the transport system. Depots have been destroyed, dozens of public transport units have been destroyed. That's why we are now working with the Norman Foster Foundation to create a new Master Plan and start a large-scale reconstruction of the city. The transport network will play a huge role in it. I hope for further fruitful cooperation in this matter,’ said Igor Terekhov.

In her turn, Louise Hague said that the UK has almost completed the selection of companies to develop the Kharkiv transport strategy.

‘It is hard for me to hear about the destruction of your city. We fully support Ukraine and condemn Russia's actions. And yes, it is important to continue rebuilding, including in the context of public transport accessibility. We look forward to contributing to the historic recovery of Kharkiv and are already in the final stages of selecting companies that will develop a strategy in cooperation with our ministry's experts,’ said Louise Hague.
