Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov addressed the deputies and the community of Nuremberg on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
The event was attended by Nuremberg Mayor Markus König and Deputy Mayor of Nice Christiane Amiel.
Before Igor Terekhov's speech, the audience was shown a video about the cooperation between Kharkiv and Nuremberg, as well as the latter's assistance to the twin city since the beginning of Russian aggression.
Igor Terekhov emphasised how important it is for modern Ukraine and Europe to preserve the peace for which such a high price was paid. He also spoke about the situation in Kharkiv and thanked Nuremberg for its comprehensive support in the areas of energy, transport, education, housing and IDPs.
‘These days we remember the end of the Second World War, honour the memory of all those who died, and thank those who gave Europe peace. Today, 80 years later, Ukraine is once again forced to fight for the right to freedom and life. War is always terrible, but thanks to you, we are feeling a little better. We got through the winter thanks to the equipment you donated, as we were able to decentralise the heating system and survive even when the enemy targeted our energy infrastructure. We have built four underground schools and opened classrooms in six metro stations so that children can study in safe conditions. Two more radiation shelters were set up in schools in the city thanks to your help. We are building the future together with you. We are studying your experience of municipal housing and post-war reconstruction to implement it in Kharkiv. Your support is not only financial assistance. It is a manifestation of true solidarity. And for this I sincerely thank each of you,’ the mayor said.
According to Igor Terekhov, Kharkiv suffered large-scale destruction as a result of the shelling: more than 11,000 buildings were damaged, hospitals, schools, kindergartens, boiler houses, energy facilities and public transport were significantly affected. The estimated total damage exceeds €10 billion.
The Mayor of Nuremberg, Markus König, expressed his support for Kharkiv and the whole of Ukraine. He noted that the partnership between the cities gained even deeper meaning during the war and assured of further assistance in the reconstruction of Kharkiv.
‘80 years ago, the Second World War ended. And today Nuremberg is a city of peace and a city of human rights. The solidarity of the citizens of Nuremberg, numerous organisations and institutions is proof that our twinning is not just about formalities or diplomacy. We sincerely support you and will make our contribution to the reconstruction of Kharkiv and Ukraine,’ said Markus König.
