Igor Terekhov discusses projects to upgrade water supply system with UNICEF

Today, February 17, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov met with Munir Mammadzade, the head of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Ukraine.

The parties discussed the transfer of equipment for water supply and water treatment and outlined areas for future cooperation in the educational sector.

Ihor Terekhov thanked UNICEF for the support of Kharkiv residents and noted that today the city's priorities are to ensure access to quality drinking water for all citizens. This, in turn, requires a comprehensive reconstruction of water supply networks.

"Clean water in the taps is a very important issue for Kharkiv. Therefore, we are interested in intensifying work on these projects. Because many networks have suffered significant damage due to the shelling," emphasized Igor Terekhov.

The mayor also focused on problematic issues in the field of education, noting that there is still a need for at least 2,500 more laptops for the education of children from privileged categories living in Kharkiv.

"We are building new shelters where children can study. The security situation does not allow us to open regular schools yet. However, most schoolchildren in Kharkiv are now studying remotely. And there are families, for example, with three school-age children, and parents cannot afford to provide computers for all of them. This is a big problem," the mayor said.

According to Munir Mammadzade, their team actively cooperates with Kharkivvodokanal. As part of this work, last year alone, UNICEF handed over 70 generators to the utility company.

"Our task is to help the city make sure that the water supply system works efficiently. And the social component is also very important to us, i.e. supplying water to hospitals, schools, dairy kitchens, and supporting education in general. Kharkiv has taken a very unconventional approach in the face of war by setting up a metro school. Although we understand that this is a forced decision," said Munir Mammadzade.
