Igor Terekhov: Economic support is crucial for Kharkiv's development

Today, on June 11, Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov took part in a panel discussion “Investments in Infrastructure as the Core of Regional and Local Recovery”.

The event was held as part of the international conference Ukraine Recovery Conference. The panelists discussed how economic recovery and the return of Ukrainian citizens shape the priorities for Ukraine's recovery.

Igor Terekhov noted that the war has made adjustments to Kharkiv's plans, but has not crossed them out, but postponed them for a certain period. At the same time, thanks to the support of international partners, Ukraine has received new opportunities for development.

“We need weapons, but economic support is also very important. I want the funds and equipment provided to us to be used to develop business and the IT sector, to introduce the latest technologies,” said Igor Terekhov.

The mayor emphasized that each shelling leads to the destruction of housing and critical infrastructure. In particular, as a result of massive enemy attacks, Kharkiv was left without its own electricity generation.

“We have to make extraordinary efforts, all branches of government and our international partners, to survive the next winter. But we are well aware that if we don't have the most advanced air defense system, no matter what we do, the enemy will destroy it all. It will be a matter of time. It is also important for us to decentralize the heat, water and electricity supply systems,” emphasized Igor Terekhov.

The mayor also noted that during the war, intolerance to any manifestations of corruption in Ukrainian society has increased significantly. Transparency of the authorities is also important for investors. That is why Kharkiv has established the Centralized Procurement Organization of Kharkiv City Council, which eliminates corruption risks and significantly saves the city budget through bulk purchases.
