Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov met with representatives of the US government and a delegation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
During the visit, the parties discussed the situation in the city. Igor Terekhov spoke about the consequences of the war for Kharkiv, support for internally displaced persons and thanked international partners for their help.
‘I know that you have visited Northern Saltovka, seen the destruction and all that the aggressor country has done. Unfortunately, enemy shelling has claimed many lives. And Severnaya Saltovka is not the only district of the city that has suffered such attacks. 160,000 Kharkiv residents were left homeless. However, despite all the difficulties, the city continues to live, although we have to respond to new attacks almost every day. The other day, a ‘Shahed’ hit the private sector: 18 houses were damaged and one was completely destroyed. However, thanks to international support, in particular from the United States, 25,000 Kharkiv residents have been able to get resources to rebuild their homes during the full-scale war. And the need for assistance remains - it is enormous,’ the mayor stressed.
During the meeting, the U.S. congressmen asked about life in the city, the situation with energy supply, the challenges faced by local authorities, and the urgent needs of Kharkiv residents.
Caroline Lindholm Billing, UNHCR Representative in Ukraine, noted that the organisation is ready to continue supporting the city.
‘I am very grateful to this delegation from the United States who visited Kharkiv, saw the consequences of the war with their own eyes and heard from the people. We will continue to support the city and help those who need it most,’ said Caroline Lindholm Billing.
